Deferrmemts

I have student loans that I am paying on, but my work circumstances ahve changed. I am not able to work nearly as many hors as I could when I first entered repayment.

Due to a health issue I have now have a handicap placard for my car, and have been excused from jury duty. Are these events enough to get a disability deferrment on my student loans?

your best recourse are the student loan companies that buyout your loan and give a lower interest.

Deferment

If your loan is in the U.S. and subsidized by the government, you can qualify for up to three years of deferment based on economic hardship. During this time you don't have to pay any of the principal, but it's a good idea to keep current with interest payments.

If your disability is considered "permanent and total"--that is, your doctor does not expect you to be able to work again in any capacity, your loan may be forgiven. I certainly hope your circumstances aren't that bad, though!

The big thing is to get in touch with your loan company NOW and tell them honestly what's going on. Don't wait until you fall way behind on payments, or they will be less willing to deal with you. Also, it may hurt your credit.

I had the same problem at first myself. I had lost my job and went to working part time. I just went full time with the same company and I am going back to school to work on a second degree.
