Reasons why people dont save.

People dont save because they make a mistake of believing that they cant do it and it is nt worth it.People dont think that even small amounts per day can make a difference if added up.

People with high medical cost also have a problem saving.

Not saving

Let's face it, even the most experienced money manager can be hard pressed to save if there is too little coming in and too much flowing out. The cost of living has risen much more quickly than pay increases for most people.

You've all made great points here. It is hard to put money back when your incoming funds just barely meet the outgoing requirements. This is my situation however I do save all pocket change which adds up to a small but nice savings every month.

Saving pocket change

That's a good idea, Randomthoughts, and one that hadn't occured to me. I always have a purseful of change at the end of the month. Maybe I should start sticking that into my savings account rather than using it for coffee or books.

I hope you'll let us know how this works out for you! This has been the most painless way I've found to save. On really good days ("no, I really don't need to go to Starbucks!") I clean all of the ones out of my wallet and add them to my change as well. I also started this silly little thing where on grocery day I do all of my shopping as normal and then before checking out return one thing from my cart that I really don't need. Whatever the cost of the item is I "pay" to myself in the form of savings. HTH

I try and save some money, no matter how little. I give up my Dunkin Donuts coffee for a week and put that money aside and I save my change in a huge glass jar.

I agree a lot of people don't save because it's only a small amount. They believe you have to have a twenty or something to save it. Or think "Hey why not go buy the soda, it's only a couple of dollars and I need to get rid of these quarters". They don't realize if you save just 2 dollars a day somehow at the end of the year you'll have close to a grand. That's a serious amount of cash.

I try to save whatever I can. I maxed out my 401K contribution. I also have an IRA that I do not touch.

This is a very good idea. I used to have one of those jars but I'll admit that
I haven't been doing so well with using it. When I have a handful of quarters
it goes for parking meters or other things that need quarters and there isn't
too much leftover to put into a jar. I really should start that again.
