This is what happens to all the offers like this that I get, too.
I figure if I ever want another credit card, I'll apply for the card
of my choice and it most likely won't be one that just showed
up in the mailbox.

Good suggestions.I I fell paying off your credit card bills on times will go a long way in improving your credit score. Settle your debts as soon as possible. That will create good credit history which will earn you some good credit points.

tips to improve your credit score

Do not let cards collecting dust. The evaluation model takes into account how long it has been for some account was used. credit facilities have a positive effect on credit score. Cards that gathers dust in your dresser drawer does not help your FICO credit score.

Personally, I assume all the "pre-approved" credit score cards and letters are a scam. Most of the time, even IF you qualify, you don't qualify for the volume they say you do. You finish up finding a pittance and then usually with a larger curiosity price than you had been expecting. I shred every a single and then melt away them! Kitchenaid Mixer Covers
