Pet insurance?

Hi, I'm the proud "Mom" of three cats, one very old one and two younger ones. I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on pet insurance, whether it's cost effective or not. I've heard some people say it saved their pet's life and saved them from financial ruin, and I've heard others say it's a waste of money because so few conditions are covered.

Anyone had any personal experiences they'd like to share? I had to put out the money if it's a bad deal...

I have three cats, but I do not have pet insurance. They have been pretty healthy. We keep our cats indoors. They are not allowed outside.

I have had a few situations where I wish I had had pet insurance. It would have saved me some money, if only a little. Just check out the plan very carefully before you purchase it.

I talked to my new vet who carries brochures on pet insurance. Especially, with older animals you can save money. Unfortunately, my dog though vibrant has a failing body and it living out his life.

I think its a wonderful idea if its affordable. I have three dogs and a cat. Vet bills can be quite expensive. I am wondering though if it standard practice for vets to take it, or if I would have to search one out.

I don't have personal health insurance, I certainly wouldn't spend the money on insurance for my animals. They are just animals, afterall. And, don't get me wrong, I've had animals that were just like kids to me. If they're sick I take care of them, I just CAN'T see spending the money on them if they're healthy.

Saving money

A few years ago one of my cats developed thyroid trouble. For some reason he couldn't tolerate the oral medications, so I had to have him "radiated" for a grand total of almost $2000. I hated to spend the money, but I hated even more than that to let an otherwise healthy animal and great friend die. It's been five years since I made that decision, and he remains a fine, loving, and healthy companion.

I just wonder what would have happened if I'd had health insurance then. Would they have assisted with the costs, or would it have been on their list of "common to the species--not covered" items?

That's the exact reason for insurance; just in case. You don't need it when you are healthy, you need it when you aren't. Some people will put an animal down immediately if diagnosed with cancer. It's their choice. But yes, if you are going through this world with no health insurance, I'd get m,yself at least major medical before I got anything for anybody else. Human or otherwise.

Not all vet do take the insurance but more and more are. The expense can be quite draining.

I haven't heard any of the vets in my area that actually take any insurances that are currently offered. And I just can't see spending the amount of money they're asking. It just doesn't make sense. Maybe if I had a champion or a really great breeder, but not just for a "regular" pet. It doesn't make good financial sense to me.
