Will San Antonio Say No To Payday Loans?

They say everything is bigger in Texas, and payday loans are no exception. Thanks to a fairly permissive set of state laws governing cash advance lending, fast cash loans carry high interest rates in the Lone Star State and lenders are allowed to engage in practices that many feel are predatory and unfair. And unlike the handful of states that have introduced regulatory fast cash loan legislation in 2008, Texas shows no immediate signs of doing so. Individual Texan cities are unauthorized to do anything about the high price of these controversial personal loans, but they are empowered to pass ordinances on the zoning and/or opening of new payday lending businesses. Several towns have flexed their legal muscles in this way, and it looks like San Antonio could be next.

San Antonio is home to a few notable sports teams and a pile of payday loan stores. The City Council has discussed the fact that many believe these cash advance businesses are preying on the citys most financially-vulnerable residents. Councilwoman Sheila McNeil recently opened up to a local news station about the possibility that the council might regulate where new personal loan businesses could open. Similar legislation in other cities (Texan and otherwise) has included clauses about news businesses proximity to other loan stores, schools, residences, and/or major thoroughfares.

Local payday loan stores greeted the news with contempt, arguing that their alternative personal loan products are in high demand with San Antonios consumers. Cash advance industry representatives have long argued that depriving consumers of fast cash loan products only marginalizes working poor individuals and families to a worse extent than they are already.

payday loans aren't very healthy. everybody knows that but when it comes to emergencies, it's the fastest place to get a loan. it's bad to get too much of it so just make sure to take one with moderation and pay them off asap.
