Preapproval

The few times I have gone in to buy a car I always get my financing from my credit union before stepping foot on the car lot. I have found this makes the process pretty easy.

That is very smart to do Lyric. It does make the process of handling the dealership much better and you usually get a better deal through your credit union anyway.

I certainly endorse the idea of first looking at a local credit union's interest rates. They have always done well by me.

Are bank rates that much different from credit unions? Not everyone can just walk in and open an account at credit union. What do you do in that case?

Actually there are credit unions that you can join independantly, we just have to check in the area you are in.

There are two credit unions where I live. One is for teachers only. The other you have to work for a company in the area that uses them. So, it's not easy to open accounts there. And, I'm pretty sure they're not going to give you a loan for a car if you don't have an account with them.

mamab, you might be able to find another credit union to join by checking online. I know some cater to professional organizations which anyone can join, thereby making them eligible to join the credit union.

I totally agree with getting preappoved through your credit union first. You will more than likely get a better deal through them.

Preapproval

This sounds like an excellent suggestion. I've written before in this forum about how I'm susceptible to getting talked into more car than I can really afford or (more often) cars that are unreasonably priced. Perhaps if I were pre-approved, I could go in feeling more relaxed, knowing in advance exactly what I had to spend.
