Budget

I wonder why they insist on targeting your payment slightly above the amount you tell them you have budgeted? My sister is looking at cars right now and told them she doesn't want to spend more than $300 a month, so of course the first thing they brought back was $325. I will never understand why they think you can magically pull bits of money from personal spaces on your body when you already told them what you can afford. My husband is a car salesman and he still cant give me any insight. LOL

It's all about making the sale. If they can squeeze a little more out, they will. Also, there's probably an expectation that people are being dishonest about how much they're actually willing to pay.

Car salesmen want to get whatever they can out the buyer. Taia is correct in what she said. If you sister keeps shopping around and bargaining, she can get the payment she would prefer to have.

Lowball It

Salespeople will get whatever they can, and they figure how you manage to come up with extra money is your problem. One thing you can try is lowballing your offer, for instance, start out saying you can only afford $250 in car payments per month, even if your real limit is $300. Then, slowly let the salesperson bargain you up to what you were going to spend anyway. He'll be happy and your budget will be safe.

This is a good idea in many areas of life that need to be negotiated. Everyone ends up thinking they "won" but no one actually suffers defeat.

When a salesman does this, it is best to just leave the lot. There wouldn't be such a rush to push for more if people consistently fdenied ANY chance of a sale to those who try to get more this way.

I am constantly telling my husband that its a good thing he will never have to sell a car to me, because I simply don't have the patience. I have walked out on several car deals because I told them what I wanted, and they told me what they thought I could do. My sister is young and naive, I told her she should walk away, but of course she didnt.

Good for you! There really is no point entertaining suggestions that are outside of your own plans, especially since a car doesn't appreciate the way a home does.
